| Video Discription | India's aviation sector is poised for a takeoff. The country is readying a plan to double the count of airports by 2047. The plan - which is being prepared by India's airport authority - includes developing existing airstrips to build full-fledged airports and also constructing new airports from scratch. Remember, there are currently 138 airports that are operational in the country. Before delving into further details, let's understand a bit about the target year of 2047. Well, the airport expansion plan will form part of the Viksit Bharat and in short, Vision 2047. While presenting the Interim Budget on the 1st of February this year, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman outlined the government’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat by 2047.’ Viksit Bharat translates to ‘developed India’ - which means that the country aims to become prosperous with modern infrastructure and technologies. A Viksit Bharat also aspires to provide opportunities for all citizens and regions so that they can reach their full potential by the year 2047. Remember, as India got Independence in 1947, the year 2047 marks a 100th anniversary. A comprehensive roadmap for achieving Viksit Bharat will likely be unveiled in the full budget which is due for presentation on July 23rd. Now coming back to the plan. The draft plan - called the National Airports Development Plan - shows that 70 airstrips can be developed into full-scale airports capable of handling narrow-body aircraft. In addition, 40 airstrips have been identified that can be upgraded to handle smaller aircraft. The plan also says that in case, an existing airstrip can not be developed owing to any reason, then a greenfield or a new airport will be built. This would be to ensure that there is a civilian airport within a radius of 50 km. As per the initial evaluation, the existing airstrips in locations such as Mandvi in Gujarat, Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh, Tura in Meghalaya, and Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh can be developed to handle small aircraft operations. In addition, the draft proposes that new greenfield airports can be established in Kota in Rajasthan, Kottayam in Kerala, Parandur in Tamil Nadu, Puri in Odisha, Purandar in Maharashtra and Car Nicobar and Minicoy Islands in Andaman and Nicobar. In terms of estimates, the annual passenger traffic is projected to soar to up to 3.5 billion by 2047. Plus, as per the draft, India is likely to achieve an average of 1 trip per-capita per annum annually. Now this overall draft is currently under discussion in the civil aviation ministry and Airports Authority of India. Remember, India recently emerged as the third-largest domestic aviation market in the world. As the sector is on the growth runway, will the budget 2024 pump more investment?
