In middle school, I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing this trend because teachers, peers, and other school parents would negatively label me as “one of THOSE Black kids”. It’s sad that the internalized racial oppression goes as far to make you want to differentiate yourself from your community, lean into tokenism, and the narrative that being Black and excellent is a rarity. Using trends like this to dive deeper into identity, racial trauma, and creativity is one of the few places I think social media truly can make a big difference for the better.
