This stotram is a part of Padma Purana. Lord Indra first recited this stotra in praise of Goddess Mahalakshmi. The first eight stanzas of the stotra are composed in praise of Devi Mahalakshmi, The rest of the stanzas talk about the benefits of chanting Mahalakshmi Ashtakam. Salutations to you O Mahamaya, One who resides in Shri Peetha (her abode) and is adored by the Gods, One who holds the Shankha (Conch-shell), the Chakra (Discus) and the Gada (Mace): Reverential Salutations to You, O Devi Mahalakshmi. Salutations to the One who is riding the Garuda (Lord Vishnu’s Vahana). The One, who destroyed the demon Kola Asura. The One, who destroys all sins caused by the mind, body, and soul. I worship thee, Devi Mahalakshmi. The One, who is aware of everything in the creation, One who fulfills all desires, One who is the destroyer of all evils, One who removes all miseries. I worship thee, Shri Mahalakshmi. The one who bestows success and intelligence. The one who gives liberation or Moksha (Salvation). The one who is an embodiment of all Mantras, I worship thee, Devi Mahalakshmi. who is Without Beginning (Aadi) and Without End (Anta), and who is the Great Goddess representing the Primordial Power (Adi Shakti). The one who is the born of Yoga (union with divine), the one who is one with Yoga. I worship thee, Shri Mahalakshmi. The one who is gross, subtle and most terrifying, the one who has great powers, I worship thee, Devi Mahalakshmi. The one who is seated on a lotus, who can assume the form of Supreme Brahman, who is the Supreme Goddess and the Mother of the Universe; Reverential Salutations to You, O Devi Mahalakshmi. One who is clad in pure white clothes, one who is adorned with many ornamentations, who abides within the Universe as the Mother of the Universe directing our lives and all activities; Reverential Salutations to You, O Devi Mahalakshmi. Reciting this once everyday destroys great sins. Reciting this twice everyday bestows one with wealth and food. Reciting this thrice every day destroys great enemies.
