The Story of OUT OF THE WOODS Available Now!
You may have heard me talk about “Psalming” before, how I sing the Psalms out loud, and how I’ve learned more about writing worship from doing just that than anything else. But recently, as I read the Bible, I decided to sing all the songs I came across. Enter Song of Solomon, the longest song of all. As I sang it, I realized there were 3 voices in this song: the voice of the male, the female, and the choir of maidens. I then realized that this happens a lot in Psalms as well. Sometimes God sings, then David sings. There was one song where David addressed over 20 different things! It opened my eyes to the possibility of many voices in one song, even in worship.
I sat down at the piano. As my fingers hit the keys, I began to sing to God with all my heart, from the valley I was in, with my own voice. And, as songwriters often do, I heard Him sing back to me in that still small voice. But this time, instead of weaving it into one tense, I let it be. And in the spirit of Song of Solomon, I wondered what it would be like to hear a choir of the “Great cloud of witnesses,” as it mentions in Hebrews 12. I wondered what they may sing to me. I thought about my grandparents and other dear friends I’ve lost through the years. What if I could hear them, along with the voice of God, cheering me on?
I pray I heard accurately, as I do every song. I realize this is different. But maybe it will give voice to some important things.
I’ll never forget being in the studio and recording this with my friend Ryan Hall as the voice of Jesus. When we got to the very end of the song, I could not hold back the tears. I truly felt the presence of God. I pray you do too. And I hope you let this song bring to mind all those you love that are cheering for you from the other side right now. And while, like this song, your circumstances may not change, may you find strength in remembering that He is always with you.
All my love,
Krissy
