Maha Shivaratri is a Hindu festival celebrated annually in honour of Lord Shiva, and in particular, marks the night of the heavenly marriage and consummation between Shiva and Parvati. It is also referred to the night when Shiva performs the heavenly dance. Lord Pashupati Nath Temple is one of the most sacred Hindu temples of Nepal which is located on both banks of Bagmati River on the eastern outskirts of Kathmandu. Every year this temple attracts hundreds of elderly followers of Hinduism. Thousands of devotees visit the famous Shiva Shakti Peetham nearby as well. Holy rituals are performed all over the nation. Artists from various classical music and dance forms perform through the night. On Maha Shivaratri, married women pray for the well being of their husbands. Maha Shivaratri meaning the night of Lord Shiva is one of the major festivals of Nepal and literally means “Night of Shiva”. It is celebrated on the 14th day of the dark fortnight of the Magh or Phalgun month, as per the Hindu lunar calendar. Pilgrims and Sadhus(Naga Babas) from various part of the country and from different State of India gathered to observe and celebrate the Maha Shivratri Festival every year in the Pashupati NathTemple in Kathmandu, Nepal. |
