| Video Discription | The Earth's umbra is involved in both total and partial lunar eclipses,while same is true with moon for solar eclipse. I used mobile camera to find out how light source is seen from various regions of the shadow. Umbra - Darkest region of the shadow and penumbra - slightly darker one. I used flashlight of phone - identical to point light source. Camera from another phone is used to capture light source visibility from umbra and penumbra region. LED bulb acts as an extended light source. This screen is used to capture shadow. As tracing paper is used, I can view shadow from the back side as well, without getting in the way of an object or light source. Plastic ball mounted on needle and eraser acts as an object. With this arrangement, I can move light source, ball as well as screen in all directions. These movements reflect the change in shadow of the ball captured on the screen. Near pointed light source of mobile flash results in sharper shadows. If I replace this light source with bulb, shadows are hazy. Darker region is called umbra while outside faint region is called the penumbra. In dark region, light is completely blocked by an object. In outer faint region, only some light of the available light reaches. This can be seen by placing camera of the phone at various locations on the shadow. This is the start of penumbra region. This is where umbra region is. I can not see the bulb. Umbra region will increase if light sources becomes more and more pointed. [ Pointed light source does not exist practically ] . What will happen if I replace white light with this green light ? Shadows are always black. This is the region where no light reaches. But you might see some tinge of color for single light source if light source is extended. I can use this LED light which is green in color. I will project it on the wall. You can see that the darkest region is still black. But outer region where some light reaches, it has a green shade.
