That's the verdict of former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan, who feels the Ripon financier was a key figure in turning the PIF-backed takeover into a reality. Staveley is set to leave the club this summer, with her six per cent share being bought by the Saudi-owned PIF. She was instrumental in the takeover of the club from Mike Ashley in 2021 and appointing Eddie Howe as head coach. However, the club are now set to move on, with new sporting director Paul Mitchell tasked with helping to strengthen the squad, alongside Howe. Jordan and Staveley have not always seen eye to eye on many matters, but he acknowledged that the deal she was able to strike for the purchase of the Magpies now looks like a 'great' one, especially given the prices quoted for other clubs. Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan said: “Amanda got them in the door. They bought Newcastle and you look at it for around £300 million, you look at a team in the Premier League for £300 million. When you look at clubs being sold for £2.5b, it’s a great deal. “And she was instrumental in that, but it wasn’t her money. So with all due respect, she was clever at manipulating the circumstances to get people that wanted to buy a football club. She orchestrated a deal. She got 10% shareholding out of it. She’s probably cashed out very nicely at that. Fair play to her.” |
